The short version
- The most common SEO retainer band in Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers was $501 to $1,000 a month.
- Premium contractor agencies publish much higher prices, with local SEO listed from about $2,800 a month (checked Oct 2026).
- Budget options exist too, from a few hundred dollars a month, usually without ad management.
- Contract length, website ownership and what's actually included matter as much as the monthly price.
- Judge SEO by booked jobs and revenue over months, not by rankings in month one.
SEO for plumbers costs anywhere from a couple hundred dollars a month to several thousand. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common retainer band was $501 to $1,000 a month. Premium agencies that specialize in contractors publish local SEO prices starting around $2,800 a month. The monthly number matters, but contract length, what’s included and who owns your accounts matter just as much.
Here’s what published prices actually show, what drives the cost, and how to tell if it’s worth it for your shop.
What surveys say SEO costs
Two surveys are worth knowing, with their limits:
- Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers. The most common monthly retainer band was $501 to $1,000 (20.4% of providers). The survey’s charts date to early 2023, and its averages assume everyone charges the top of their price band, so lean on the bands, not the averages.
- SE Ranking (December 2024, 260 responses, worldwide) found “64% of agencies offer monthly retainers below $1,000.”
Neither survey is plumbing-specific, and both mix freelancers with agencies. They’re a sanity check, not a price list.
What plumbing-focused agencies publish
Most big agencies hide their prices. A few publish them. Here’s what we found on their websites in October 2026:
| Provider | What they list | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Footbridge Media | $249/mo bundle | Website, content and Google profile work; no ad management listed; no contract, 90-day money-back guarantee |
| WebFX | SEO from $2,900/mo | Listed as a two-month “initial campaign investment” of $8,600, then progressive optimization with a 6-month commitment |
| Hook Agency | Local SEO from $2,800/mo | PPC from $2,000/mo and Meta ads from $3,000/mo listed separately |
Prices change often, so check each provider’s own page before you compare. The point is the spread: the same word “SEO” covers a $249 bundle and a $2,800+ retainer.
What drives the price
- Scope. Is it just your Google Business Profile, or also service pages, links, content and technical work?
- Your market. A crowded metro takes more work than a small town.
- Who does the work. Senior specialists cost more than a template process.
- What’s bundled. Some prices include a website or ads; most don’t.
- Contract terms. Long commitments sometimes come with lower monthly prices, and less flexibility.
Setup fees and contracts
Setup fees are common. In Credo’s agency survey (2019-era data, so treat it as a rough guide), about half of SEO providers charged an onboarding fee at least some of the time, and about 30% had no minimum engagement length.
Contract length varies more than most plumbers expect. Some agencies are month-to-month; some large agencies require 6 to 12 months for SEO. Read the cancellation terms before you sign. Our list of 17 questions to ask an agency covers what to look for.
Red flags at any price
- Guaranteed rankings. Google’s own help page says, “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”
- Vague deliverables. “Ongoing optimization” with no list of what gets done.
- Reports with no calls in them. Rankings and impressions don’t pay your techs.
- Accounts in the agency’s name. Your Google Business Profile should belong to your business.
- Hundreds of copy-paste city pages. Google treats those as doorway spam. See our guide to service-area pages.
How to tell if it’s worth it
Don’t judge SEO by rankings in month one. Judge it by booked jobs and revenue over several months. A few reference points:
- Job value: a tank water heater replacement averages about $1,348 nationally (HomeAdvisor, 2026). That’s revenue, not profit.
- The alternative: plumbing Local Services Ads ran about $57 per lead with 44.5% of leads booking in one 2026 benchmark, roughly $128 per booked job (SearchLight Digital, vendor data).
- Timeline: Google profile fixes can show up in weeks, Map Pack gains usually take weeks to a few months, and organic rankings take 3 to 6+ months.
The math to run: how many extra booked jobs a month, at your real margin, cover the monthly cost? Our pricing page has a break-even calculator that does it with your own numbers.
Where we fit
We charge $1,000 a month flat with a $499 one-time setup, month-to-month. That’s less than premium contractor agencies list for SEO alone, and it covers SEO and Google Maps, your website, and Facebook and Instagram ads. It’s not the cheapest option out there, and it’s not meant to be. It’s meant to be the clearest.
